Prayer

Greetings to all :

Let me start this blog with a quote from Billy Graham

"The most eloquent prayer is the prayer through hands that heal and bless. The highest form of worship is the worship of unselfish Christian service. The greatest form of praise is the sound of consecrated feet seeking out the lost and helpless. "

I would like to use this as a forum where we can share, learn, express your opinions on topics that could lead us to deeper thought provoking debates.

Is there a style you have to follow? Can I pray in my car? (Of course not with my eyes closed) Btw, does prayer have to be done with eyes closed?

Good start, Zinger!
Folks, to post a comment, click on the topic name on the right hand side. Scroll down to see the 'Post a comment' link...and you can post your comments.

One can pray anywhere, anytime. When possible, close your eyes - its helps with being focussed & not to be distracted by things around you.
But it is not a requirement.
So pray anywhere, anytime - all the time.

Great start Zinger and perfect topic to kick it off with.

BTW I do pray in my car with my eyes closed, just kidding.

The key as Sujatha has rightly pointed is pray all the time. so we need to pray in every posture that we are in, lying down, sitting, standing, eyes opened, closed and everything in-between.

I Th 5:17 says "Pray without ceasing" How can we do that? only if we realize prayer is really communicating with God. God wants us to communicate with Him all the time.

So let us wake up in the morning say "Good Morning God" keep talking to Him through the day about everything that happens to us and don't forget to Listen to what He has to say. don't forget to end the day with a Good Night to God, God will still talk to us in our dreams.

I think if we start practicing that we will walk with God and in His ways. and not be worried about displeasing Him in our lives.

Good question Zinger. But what Billy Graham is saying is not the prayer you are talking about in your car. It is the prayer where you go out in the field and work with your "hands".

You can always pray in your car, with your eyes closed, when you are safely parked or waiting at a traffic light. God did give us common sense and we need to put that to use! There had been times when I would be at work, and may need a prayer, I would walk to my car, shut the door, "close my eyes" and pray!

This brings an interesting question. Do we have to kneel to pray? Here is what I found using Google as the traditional positions of prayer: http://www.kencollins.com/pray-20.htm.

In the Bible we see Daniel knelt down and prayed - Daniel 6:10. But the biggest inspiration for kneeling to pray comes from our Lord Jesus Christ. There are several references in the Bible where He knelt to pray. I'll probably use that as role model.

Coming back to the quote by Billy Graham... Rev. Graham just says what Jesus did. "What would Jesus do?" Jesus spent a lot of time in prayer. And He also spent a lot of time on the field, healing, preaching, meeting people etc. Here is problem with most Christians today. Most of us want to be "Church Christians" or "Prayer room (or may be car) prayer warriors". This is absolutely necessary. But Christian living doesn't end there. It continues as we go into the field - our work places, the market place, our neighborhood, our children's school etc etc. That is what Rev. Graham is talking about!

I want to know You in every way You can be known. Teach me what I need to learn in order to know You better.

Prayer is part of our training for reigning. It is not only a way of getting things, or getting help (although we thank God that it does). “Getting” through prayer is only the elementary level of prayer. Shaping through prayer is the advanced level. The end goal of prayer is to see the power of God released for His will to be done and for glory to be produced for Him.
“Prayer is a mighty instrument, not for getting man’s will done in Heaven, but for getting God’s will done on earth” – Robert Law
It is time that our prayer level goes from a "Help!" cry to a hurricane, releasing the power of God in an unprecedented way!
The more we experience the power of God through our prayers the more we will grow in confidence, boldness and stature just like the early church!

I love this. Prayer is a lifestyle, a culture and should become as natural as breathing. Prayer is a conduit we plug into all times to gain strength, be connected to the heart of God.
I love wispy clouds, sometimes I look up and I am like "whoa" - way to go God.
Prayer is not only supplication it is also praise, adoration, being in awe and wonder, Intercession and sometimes applauding, and all the cool stuff.
It is the reminder that His presence will carry us through every waking moment of the day.
